Nra Range Construction Manual
Hey MGO,
I recently moved on to 7 acres in Brandon twp and I’m thinking of setting up a small Home pistol range and maybe shooting some clays behind my house. Looking to get some thoughts on if this is safe to do or not, with Ortonville rec not to far I could always go there, but if I want to just shoot for a little bit it would be much more convenient to do it at home.
Depending on where I would shoot from I have anywhere from 100 to 150 yards to the nearest house, which of course I wouldn’t be shooting in their direction. My proposed pistol lane would be 110 yards from my property line and over 1000 to the next house in that direction. If I were to do clays my line of fire would be 125 yards to my property line and again no houses within 1000 yards of that direction.
For the pistol range I would make a berm 5-10 feet high as a back stop maybe 25 yards deep. For clays I don’t think a back stop would do me any good so I would limit shells to 2 3/4” #7 1/2 or maybe #8. But I’m thinking as long as I’m not firing in the direction of any houses I should be pretty safe. I’m not entirely certain of safe distances for shotguns as I’m just getting into shooting those.
I also have a squirrel and pigeon issue in the house and barn I want to take care of with the shot gun, being that that is hunting I know I would need to get my neighbors written permission. Provided I get that, what is the safe distance to fire a shotgun where i don’t have to worry about doing damage to neighbors houses/cars? Not that I would be shooting in that direction.
What’s everyone’s thoughts?
Thanks
